  Gallery Lambton
7/24/2009

Gallery Lambton's collection of Canadian art arouses a sense of pride in the residents of Lambton County. Connecting to Collections 2: Destinations showcases key works from the permanent collection and will be featured at Gallery Lambton from August 7 to October 24, 2009. An opening reception will be held on the First Friday, August 7, 2009, between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm.

Connecting to Collections 2: Destinations is a provocative installation that exposes the dynamic engagement between historical objects and contemporary creative voices. The exhibition juxtaposes work from Gallery Lambton's permanent collection with work by contemporary Canadian artists who are not necessarily represented in the collection.

The question of how a public art gallery works with its permanent collection stimulates considerable debate amongst curators, artists, collectors and the general public. Offering one possible approach toward how a public gallery might explore this question, Connecting to Collections 1: Points of Departure which was mounted in February, 2009 featured work from Gallery Lambton’s collection by members of the Group of Seven.

Together, Points of Departure and Destinations illustrate that regardless of what curatorial strategy is employed, the importance of a public gallery’s collection lies in the community’s ongoing engagement with works of art that reflect its past while exploring their relationship to art and culture in the present.

Destinations will feature key pieces from Gallery Lambton's permanent collection including work by: Rita Letendre, Joyce Wieland, Michael Snow, Lawren Harris, Emily Carr, Edwin Holgate, Ron Martin, Joanne Tod, William Kurelek, David Craven, Sarah Anne Johnson, A.Y. Jackson and Agnes Depew.

Alongside these favorites, work by some of Canada’s most important contemporary artists will be featured including: Jin-Me Yoon, Diana Thorneycroft, Adad Hannah, Rebecca Belmore, Douglas Copeland, Stephen Andrews, Kent Monkman, Tim Lee, Kelly Mark, Edward Burtynsky, Lynn Richardson and Iain Baxter.

Opening Reception Saturday 23 May 7pm
Show runs until Saturday 18 July 2009

Inter-Glacial Free Trade Agency examines the relationship between governments and corporations through the guise of a trade show. The exhibition focuses specifically on the end products being marketed to the last standing consumer; fashionable survival gear for a self-induced ice age triggered by global warming. All items are branded with the same logo crediting the notion that in the ‘new world’ there is only one choice.

The installation consists of numerous thawing/melting landscapes formations filling the majority of the gallery space. These formations will appear to be “working” landscapes through the use of motors and numerous identifiable manufacturing apparatuses i.e. pipelines, oil drilling stations, conveyor belts, railways, electrical lines, etc.

  A Strange Land
1/16/2009

A Strange Land is an evolving, project-based exhibition presented by the Creative Research Laboratory in collaboration with the Blanton Museum of Art. In the exhibition, themes of citizenship, urbanization, landscape and cultural modification are explored through the works of several artists, including Erica Bohm, recipient of the Mapping Exchange: Austin-Argentina Residency. Other featured artists are Beili Liu, Lynn Richardson, Cauleen Smith, and Chris Taylor. Over the course of the two week exhibition, the CRL gallery will transform into an artist studio, exhibition space and communal meeting place, with changing and evolving work that examines issues of displacement and the blending of ethos, landscapes and personal histories in a foreign land.

Eco-Sophia: The Artist of Life is a group exhibition inspired by German philosopher Wolfgang Schirmacher's 1989 essay of the same name. For generations both philosophers and scientists have been separately asking similar questions in their scholarship: how and what is coexistence, where do the boundaries of technology push us, and what is habitation? This exhibition takes Schirmacher's call for wisdom and converges on the necessary yet very complicated and nuanced symbiotic relationship between philosophy, technology, ecology and individual agency. Artists include Allora & Calzadilla, Ann Hamilton, Andrea Polli, Lynn Richardson, Kahn & Selesnick and Paul Stout. Exhibition includes catalogue with new essays by Thomas Zummer and Wolfgang Schirmacher. Catalogue designed by Omar Pierce, winner of the Sheppard Gallery's 2008 Nevada Emerging Designer Competition.

This exhibition is open early to the viewing public to coincide with the Art + Environment Conference at the Nevada Museum of Art. Special weekend hours corresponding with the conference are Sat. Oct. 5: 11am - 12pm and Sunday Oct. 6: 12pm - 2pm. Please call for more information 775-784-6658.
